Gambia is a peaceful, small country in West Africa, with an area of 11,600 km², bordering the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the Republic of Senegal on the other three sides. The capital of Gambia is Banjul, the smallest capital in Africa, with a population of less than 40,000. Gambia is famous for its beautiful nature, tropical forests and beautiful sandy beaches, as well as the export of peanuts. The legendary Kunta Kinte, the hero of the novel “Roots”, came from Gambia. Gambia is a paradise for ornithologists, with over 400 species of birds.

Geography of Gambia
Gambia is the smallest country in continental Africa in terms of area, a country in the shape of a narrow strip that cuts into the territory of Senegal, stretching for about 400 kilometers inland, along the Gambia River, from which the country takes its name. The river, flowing in a vast valley surrounded by low hills and a sandy plateau, provides convenient transport and wonderful fishing and landscape areas. Gambia is the country with the lowest maximum elevation above sea level (53 m), located entirely on the mainland. Beautiful sandy beaches stretch along the Atlantic coast.

Economy
The economy of Gambia is largely based on agriculture, which employs 3/4 of the working population. The share of agriculture in the national product is 29%. Peanuts dominate among crops, accounting for over 50% of the country’s exports. In addition, millet, sorghum, corn, oil palm, rice and vegetables are grown here. The presence of the tsetse fly limits the possibility of animal breeding. Fishing is becoming increasingly important.

Recently, the role of tourism in the country’s economic development has been increasing. Gambia does not have large reserves of mineral resources, apart from kaolin and tin ores. The agricultural processing industry dominates the industry. The UN classifies it as one of the world’s least developed countries (LDCs). The country’s main bank is the Central Bank of Gambia, headquartered in Banjul, the country’s capital.
